“The Chinese craftsman who makes a vase in what they call eggshell porcelain can give it a lovely shape, ornament it with beautiful design, stain it ravishing color, and give it a perfect glaze, but from its nature he can’t make it anything but fragile. If you drop it on the floor it will break into a dozen fragments.”—
The other week, a french journalist contacted me about doing an interview. He just saw Mega Bitch Meltdown wanted to do a profile piece about the rejected Channel 101 short. I’ll post the link to article when it comes out but in the meantime I wanted to share one of my answers because I think it pretty much sums up my reason for doing anything. I constantly try and make stuff to get out of doing other stuff. Case in point…
Q: Kate, you are an actress, director, writer, editor, music composer, banjo performer, producer, animator, make-up and digital effect artist, costume designer, casting director, puppet maker and illustrator. Among all those activities, what was the first one that attracted you? The one that gave you the desire to work in the entertainment industry?
KF: When I was little, I hated school. I didn’t see the point in going. It felt like I was doing a bunch of work and not getting compensated. I remember, when I was six, some kids from a higher grade came into our classroom and said, “who is trying out for the talent show?” Several kids raised their hands and got to leave class. Obviously, I wanted to get out of class and I raised my hand. Sure enough I was dismissed. I couldn’t believe it. They just let me leave because I said I had a talent? Something sorta clicked in my head, if you had talent you could get out of doing normal work. ”Talented” people got special treatment.
They lead me into a dark auditorium and put me on stage. Then said, “what’s your talent?” Honestly, I didn’t have one so I faked it. I started singing and acting out the song, My Boyfriend’s Back. Unfortunately, I couldn’t remember the song lyrics so I just made up my own and hoped no one would notice. I thought for sure that they would be mad at me for acting like I had a talent but everyone thought it was funny. They actually thought it was all part of my routine and put me in the show. I got to miss an entire day of class for rehearsal. From then on, I said I wanted to be an entertainer.
During the shoot I was in yesterday, my friend German shot a music video unbeknownst to all of us. The director kept catching him dancing. German would laugh it off and at the end of the day, he said, look at what I made during the shoot.
My brain is broken right now. But this is just a teaser of what’s to come!
Rob got me guitar lessons for my birthday. Today, I had my first class and learned Love Me Do by The Beatles. Interesting fact about the song. The Beatles recorded it 3 times with 3 different drummers.
